The Factory Next Door is a brilliant podcast series from journalist Steve Duke, dedicated to uncovering the people and skills behind some of Britain’s finest products. Each episode shines a light on exceptional makers—from bespoke slipper artisans to handcrafted car builders—celebrating craftsmanship in its purest form.
As Steve explains:
“Each item on the show is brilliant first, British second. We don’t feature a product because it is made on our island—we feature it because it demonstrates craft and skill that deserves recognition, wherever it’s made. If it meets that standard and it’s British-made, then it earns its place.
If we don’t celebrate the skills on our doorstep, they risk fading away. I wouldn’t want the next generation to inherit a diminished set of abilities when it comes to making and producing things. It’s critically important for any society to retain people who can build a boat, sew a shirt, or make a moccasin.”
The Factory Next Door
A podcast about people pursuing British-made perfection
When Steve approached us about visiting our North Yorkshire base, we were delighted to welcome him. He explored our canvas and wood workshops, meeting the talented makers who pour their skill, care, and passion into every marquee we produce.
Here’s how Steve describes the episode:
“This week we head to North Yorkshire to meet a team striving to keep alive the ancient art of tent making. We discover the beauty of light filtering through cotton, explore why tent-making is both simple and complex, and ask whether nice people can succeed in business.”
Episode #48: The Wedding Tent
For the first time, you can watch the episode on YouTube or listen on Spotify—step inside our workshops and experience the craft for yourself.
We were also delighted to receive a beautiful illustration from Steve, inspired by one of our marquees—a thoughtful parting gift that we absolutely love.
